Getting Ready to Golf
All the basics you need to know to play golf on a golf
course and/or get ready for your charity golf tournament.
What golf clubs do you need to start golfing?
As per the rules of golf, you are allowed to carry up to 14 golf clubs for play, but you can have fewer clubs to get started. You can buy a quality full set of golf clubs including the bag for under $1,000.
It is recommended you start with a combination of a Driver, Wood, Hybrids, Irons, Wedges, and a Putter.
(Learn more about each club below).
What is a Driver? The Driver is the longest club used for Tee Shots (the first shot on a tee box) to begin a hole on a golf course. You would typically use a longer tee depending on the size of the Driver club head.
What is a Wood? The Wood is the second longest club (in the past it was actually made of wood). You would typically use a Wood off the fairway or to begin a hole (the first shot on a tee box) instead of using a Driver.
What is a Hybrid? The Hybrid is the third longest club which is a combination of a Wood and an Iron golf club. You would typically use off the fairway or rough or to begin a hole (the first shot on a tee box) instead of using a Driver.
What is an Iron? The majority of your clubs in a set will be Irons of various lengths with numbers such as 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. If your lowest number iron is a 5 iron it will be longest iron in your set and therefore go longer distances versus your 9 iron. You would typically use an iron off the fairway or rough or to begin a hole (the first shot on a tee box) instead of using a Driver.
What is a Wedge? A Wedge is shorter in length than all the other clubs and has more angle/loft which produces height but with less distance. You have different wedges which might have a letter for example a P (for Pitching Wedge) or a G (for Gap Wedge) and others that say 56 degrees or 60 degrees. You would typically use a Wedge when you are 100
yards out from the putting green.
What is a Putter? A Putter has the least lofted head of all clubs and is used to finish out a hole on a golf course when on the putting green. You have different Putter shaft lengths and head designs.
What golf balls should you buy to play golf?
It is recommended you start with used or pre played golf balls which you can buy online or from your local retailer that carries golf balls. As a beginner you should budget for losing at least one golf ball a hole. If you plan to play 18 holes you should buy a box/bag of at least 24 golf balls (two dozen). You can buy a decent golf ball brand for less than $1.00 per golf ball. Important: Pick up a small bag of long tees (ideal for your Driver and you can simply adjust down the tee height for your smaller head clubs) or a small mixed bag (has both long and short tees) as you will need to tee up your golf ball to start each hole.
What other items to buy before playing golf on a course?
You should consider buying a golf glove which will help you with a more secure grip on the golf club especially on humid days. Make a fist to check to make sure it has a snug fit (not too tight or too lose fit in the fingers). Private golf courses most often require golf shoes (check before you arrive) otherwise, if it is your first time on a public golf course you could wear running shoes with good support and grip. Finally, what golf clothing to wear? You should not wear jeans as it can be too hot and too restrictive. It is recommended to wear clothing that does not restrict you golf swing motion and keeps you feeling cool on hot days. Please note: most private golf courses do not allow jeans, short shorts and t-shirts. Check with the private golf club dress code by calling the pro shop.
What to do before and when at the golf course?
Before heading to the golf course pre book and/or confirm your tee time (start time) by phoning the pro shop. You should try to arrive 30 to 60 minutes before your tee time to get prepared before your golf game (example: putting on your golf shoes, checking into the pro shop to pay, arrange for a power cart if you are riding or a pull cart if you are walking the golf course, etc.). It is recommended that you do a quick bag check to make sure you have all your golf clubs, golf balls, golf tees and a golf glove. If you are renting golf clubs from the golf course you should call the pro shop in advance to reserve a set of clubs and you can also buy golf balls, golf tees and a golf glove at the golf course. Some golf course have a putting green and/or a driving range or nets to warm-up before you play.
To determine the amount of golf lessons you need, we look at your golf expectations and your experience level. Most people take (5) range lessons to work on their set-up routine and swing path to help with consistency. Then there are people who take (20) plus range lessons and playing lessons over the year to help advance their skill level from Tee to Green.
We have various practice plans based on skill levels. Some people (with no experience) simply come weekly and practice home drills without a club to help improve their swing motion and balance. Then we have people who come twice a month and once a month, etc. to work on more swing fundamentals and techniques. Every person is different, but what is similar is the importance of booking a lesson immediately if you encounter swing issues as they can form bad practice habits and show up on the golf course.
